Why doesn’t the govt just subsidise solar panels for people to install in their homes directly?

Solar panels themselves have come down a lot in price recently, so even if they subsidised (offered free) fitting of them that would be something. They could buy them in bulk and sell them at cost price to bring the cost down even lower.

£2,799.00 for a 4KW kit

I think that’s generally because their break-even cost after their price and setup and maintenance costs (yes solar has maintenance) is generally near their end of life, and even if you want to go past that then 10 years is still not uncommon to reach break even, so its not politically motivative as they tend to think shorter term.

That’s only if you pay a traditional installer tho, where it costs several times the cost of the kit. If the govt subsidised the installation, and maybe even offered interest free loans I am sure people would be happy to pay £3k as they’d get that money back in just 2 years at the current rate/forecast
