I have a question about the exercise - is the bytes flag meant to be an alternative to counting lines or words, i.e. would providing the -b flag in addition to the -l flag override? The wording of the exercise makes it seem like the byte count will be provided in addition to either the line or word count.

@analogue9 Correct. The intention of the exercise was to include another option -b in addition to the existing ones. Having said that, the exercises are guidelines and you should definitely experiment on them !
