Beautiful article. Actually a better response would be: what a reality check.
I do hope that with these negative experiences in the world as relates to work(and not just tech) that we’ll see the rise of a new breed of companies where employees are seen as value makers and not just mere spreadsheet rows and values.

It is because the industry is not doing well.
In the past if you were laid off, you could still find another job easily.
But now if you do not find a job right away, you will feel the pressure because you have got expenses but no income, the technology keeps advancing and the requirements for landing the next job keep increasing.
And things harder still now with AI, I remember seeing this article:

When me and some other guys saw that article we burst out laughing because Klarna had repeatedly been posting in an Elixir Slack jobs channel with positions for Erlang. This despite the CEO saying that they hadn’t been hiring for over a year…
AI is here to stay but so are the people
