HELLO WORLD (Introductions thread!)

Hi! I think we may have met, at ACCU Conference 2022. I spoke on mutation testing – and since then have also started speaking on genetic algorithms.

Former developer, who had a short love affair with Erlang but turned sysadmin is getting good vibes from Elixir. Kind of wish I had the time and ability to reimplement some of the old and mostly unmaintained systems, that I somehow have inherited.

Hi everyone!

I’m Emmanuel Kattо from Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), a passionate game developer with a love for creating immersive worlds and engaging gameplay experiences. I’ve been in the industry for several years, working on a range of projects from indie titles to larger studio games. My focus is primarily on gameplay mechanics, narrative design, or graphics programming, and I thrive on collaborating with fellow creators to push the boundaries of what games can achieve.

I’m excited to join this forum to connect with other developers, share insights, and learn from your experiences. Whether you’re working on a solo project or part of a larger team, I believe we can all benefit from sharing our knowledge and challenges.

Looking forward to engaging discussions and possibly collaborating on future projects!

Best,
Emmanuel Kattо

Hi, I’m Alvin. I came to Elixir from Ruby/Rails and I’m liking it so far.

I live in East Africa(Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania) and I’m always moving in between those 3.

Hey everyone!

I started programming when I was 10 and got into web development early on, mostly focusing on the frontend. I’ve always been fascinated by the intersection of design and technology, so working on interfaces felt like a natural starting point.

These days, I’m especially interested in the Web as a platform for distributing applications. I spend most of my time in the JavaScript/TypeScript ecosystem, but I’m also exploring Elixir and Go.

I use Devtalk mainly to stay up to date with trends and see what the community is talking about. Looking forward to learning from everyone here!

Hello world

this is Sebastian from Germany. My interest in programming began on a 286 DOS machine in my parents’ basement, dabbling with QBasic… and while we were still not connected to the Internet, I stumbled across a driver compatibility list in HTML on our next Windows 95 machine, which opened in “Internet Explorer” - heck, what is this “Internet”? I want that! I dabbled with the HTML file and saw the changes reflected in IE after reloading… then self-teaching HTML and then some 1998 style JavaScript from books, before I finally got a dial-up modem.

From then on came Perl for server-side “cgi-bin” dabbling, and a little SQL of course to complement. Man, it’s been a long time.

In the last years of high school, I tried to wrap my head around Java, with not so much success, but as it was used as introductory language at University, it finally clicked with all those strange “objects” and “methods”. (Though I’m happy that we now have much better tools than OOP!)

After finishing my degree I learned to put software engineering into practice, and from doing as much as possible inside PostgreSQL and the remainder in Perl scripts, I finally came to Python (I had always been skeptical because I thought of it as a ‘beginner language’ and took a long time to select an in-depth book not aimed at programming beginners, which I found in “Fluent Python”.

Then SICP with Scheme, then some Clojure, now trying out Elixir. Functional Programming is king! I’ve tried to get to grips with Haskell several times, but meanwhile I came to the conclusion that trying to learn Haskell is two or three things at once. It’s not only Functional Programming, but the abstractions through types (plus laziness and monadic I/O) at the same time, which makes it too hard to tackle at once. I think I can give it another try, now that I think I fully understood Functional Programming (through dynamic languages) and it’s only the static typing that remains (and the somewhat strange ML-style syntax, including indentation, which I yet have to get used to).

You see, I really like learning programming languages. And I love reading books for that matter because I like to be taught the concepts from the ground up. At work, I’m a Data (Software) engineering guy, especially deep into PostgreSQL. My daily drivers are Linux, I once used Arch on my private notebook, now Gentoo, and currently transitioning over to NixOS. I also tried FreeBSD and I love ZFS for the peace of mind not having to experience “bit-rod” any more!
