It’s one of those technologies that has obvious benefits but also obvious risks. Recovering stolen cars or identifying vehicles involved in serious crimes is a legitimate use, but the ability to search for almost any visual characteristic makes it much more powerful than the term “license plate reader” suggests. That’s where oversight and transparency become really important.
The concern here is not only what the cameras can detect today, but how easily the collected data could be combined with other systems later. A tool introduced for vehicle security can gradually become a much broader surveillance network without most people fully realizing how much information is being stored. Clear limits on retention and access seem just as important as the technology itself.
