We’ve just launched the initial version of our automated and semi-automated news systems - helping keep you up to date on what’s going on in the dev world.
Official language and framework news (automated)
This is for our language and framework portals, where we get the latest GitHub release or official blog post for that portal’s language or framework
Here are some examples:
- https://forum.devtalk.com/tag/language-blog-posts
General dev/tech news (semi-automated)
This is where we keep you up to date on what’s happening in the wider dev/tech world by tracking some of the most respected or widely used sites around. Currently we have added the following news sources:
- Hacker News front page
- Lobsters front page
- BBC Tech News
We will also be adding other sources as suggested by members, eg:
- Ars Technica
- TechCrunch
- Engadget/Gizmodo
Here’s how the system works:
- We post links to the latest news stories from those sources in a special members-only section
- If a member thinks any of the links are interesting enough to click through to, we post a dedicated thread for that item on the forum for everyone else
Ignoring items
Although we have made it easy to quickly spot which threads are related to this system on the forum by making the bot avatar grey and the News Alerts section grey, you can also easily ignore items that you are not interested in by muting the related tags or the News Alert section.
You can mute by hitting the bell icon in the top right corner when on a section or tag page.
- If you want to ignore all of the initial News Source threads - simply mute the #members-only:news-alerts section
- If you want to ignore threads from a specific news source, simply mute its tag. Each news source has a
via-name
type tag, eg,via-hacker-news
- If you want to ignore all threads from all news sources, simply mute all of their
via-name
tags, or thein-the-news
tag where their threads are posted initially
Complaining about any of the news sources and other feedback
We aim to add only respected sources. If you feel any of the sources we add fall below standards (e.g, constantly having items that go against equality, etc) then please let us know and we will review their inclusion. Please start a thread in our #members-only:help-feedback section for this and other other feedback you have relating to this system.
Refining the system
We will continue to refine the system so please expect some changes! We can’t wait to see where this leads and are very excited by this new addition - we hope you are too!
