I think that when you ask the question in English, ChatGPT uses its training from the English language corpus so it’s going to be based on other people who don’t speak French.
The best translator right now is Deepl, it mostly gets it right. It will also get many expressions right, like if you try “have your cake and eat it too”, it will correctly use the equivalent idiom in French (have butter or butter’s money) while Google Translate is usually very literal minded.
