If tinkering with hardware and the ability to diagnose and repair your own equipment appeals to you, Steve Motty can help you get started. This is the first in a series of articles on using JTAG boundary scan on Medium:

JTAG boundary scan captures a simple black and white, high or low, 1-bit image of the electric energy at each pin pad on a circuit board, allowing you to verify that connections between pins are correct and that each pin is functioning properly. You’ll need some open source software, a board with an identifiable JTAG connector; and a JTAG probe with a matching plug. The board and probe can be purchased for under $100 and the software is free.

Note: The articles from PragPub archives that we are releasing on Medium in May are those that are most requested on the PragProg website but no longer available (404). The majority of those articles are about functional programming. Any speculation as to why from my DevTalk peeps?

Today on Medium, a PragPub article from March 2012 in which Alexander Demin walks through how to:

  1. Develop a CPU that performs only one primitive instruction.
  2. Write a non-trivial calculation in this CPU’s single-instruction assembly language.
  3. Use Ruby as a macro domain-specific language to compile it all.

This is one of those articles that we are bringing back based on a significant number of requests on the PragProg site, where it is no longer available. Enjoy!
