The headline is a bit misleading; the article says, several paragraphs in:
LightOn’s Optical Processing Unit (OPU) uses photonics to speed up randomized algorithms at a very large scale. However, it also works in tandem with standard silicon CPUs and Nvidia’s A100 GPU technology.
So more like “in addition to”, rather than “instead of”.
