Ah nice one Jay! And I wonder if we can help find a functional programming expert to read the book and share their thoughts from a functional programming perspective with a view to the comments helping you with such a post or collaborating with you on one.
Leave it with me and I’ll look into this once our 2021 Update is done
Lots. But the tech learning based one is- I am primarily focusing on RDBMS this year. In particular Postgresql, focusing on internals and optimization techniques/patterns. As side effect learning C and some cool algorithms in the process.
Another worth mentioning would be baking. I never baked but wish to get into it this year.
Thank you for bringing up this topic. Interesting discussion.
For several years, I never made new year resolutions. I felt that if I made resolutions and didn’t follow through on them, I would feel like a failure and perhaps even feel depressed about failing to fulfill some kind of life mission.
What I do is the opposite. I record what I’ve done over the past year. On a smaller scale, I evaluate and record my daily activities. I create a daily check-ins in my personal Basecamp and I’ll write down what I did that day and what I want to do next day.
I usually make a short-term strategic plan (around six weeks) for the things I plan to do. If I have time, I’ll create a long-term dream plan.
I find this kind of pattern more calming. But on the other hand, it also gives me direction for what I want to do.
For example, after a 10-year coding hiatus (in the sense of seriously building apps)—I did other things :)—over the past three months I’ve wanted to intensively learn Elixir/Phoenix. I’m grateful to have been able to do so.
